ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA; WEDNESDAY JUNE 28, 2017 – It was a disastrous start for defending champions St Vincent and the Grenadines when they kicked off their campaign in the 2017 Windward Islands Football Association Senior Men’s Football Tournament at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium on Wednesday night.
Following a first half where the action flowed continuously, the Vincentians succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Saint Lucia, as all three goals were scored in the second half.
Danny Mullackey sent Saint Lucia ahead in the 74th minute, and then Kurt Frederick made it 2-nil in the 80th to the dismay of the Vincentians.
The defending champions did not give up and mounted several goal raids, one of them saw the feeble shot going wide of the upright with an open goal staring the striker in the face.
Chavel Cunningham pulled one back for the Vincentians in the 89th minute, but it was just too late, as Saint Lucia secured an important three points in the first round of matches.
The Saint Lucia squad to the 2017 Windward Islands Football Association Senior Men’s Football Tournament is Quamie Jones, Shawn Evans, Keeroy Lionel, Alvinus Myers, Melvin Doxilly, Gregson President, Cassius Joseph, Aaron Richard, Nangee Philip, Erickson Magloire, Antonio Joseph, Zacherius Simon, Melanius Mullarkey, Malik St Prix, Lester Joseph, Otev Lawrence, and Kurt Frederick, with the technical team consisting of Francis Lastic -Head Coach,
Alvin Xavier -Assistant Coach, Keiber Codrington- Physio, and Victorin Laurence -Head of Delegation.
In the night’s second game, hosts Grenada were shocked by Dominica when Julian Wade pounced on a loose ball as the goalkeeper hesitated in dealing with a back pass, to send Dominica into the lead in the 14th minute.
Rickson Phillip found the back of the nets in the 74th minute, but the Dominicans held on in a very physical game to share the points.
After the first round of matches, Saint Lucia has three points, Grenada and Dominica one point each, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines without a point.
Match day two is on Friday June 30, 2017 with games at the Fond Playing Field in St Patrick, where Dominica takes on Barbados from 5:00 p.m., and at 7:00 p.m., hosts Grenada takes on Saint Lucia.
