GROS-ISLET, SAINT LUCIA – The curtains came down this past Saturday evening on one of the biggst parties in sports – the 2016 14th Annual Blackheart/SLFA knockout football tournament, at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground with Vieux Fort South crowned champions.
Before an estimated crowd of over 6000 patrons, Marchand and Vieux Fort South did not disappoint the football faithful, Marchand started off the better of the two teams, mounting attack after attack but not taking their chances, Vieux Fort South held off the waves of attack and countered as well.
The action was wall to wall stuff, and midway in the 1st half, however Vieux-Fort South started showing more purpose and intent, scoring in the 41st minute from the boots of Antonius Mayers.
In the second half knowing what was still at stake between the two first timers at the finals, tried desperately to score, especially through sleek passing, interchanging and constant breaks down the flanks.
It just wasn’t to be for either and that one goal was all Vieux-Fort South needed to seal victory over Marchand and make history in the process as the first team to be crowned Blackheart Champions at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
For their efforts, Vieux Fort South go home with $25,000.00, plus $5000.00 towards youth development, the FLOW champions trophy, gold medals and other incentives.
