KINGSTOWN, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES – It was a tough opening day for Caribbean players at the 2017 ITF Junior Tennis Tournament in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, August 14 – 19, 2017.

On the opening day Monday August 14, 2017 in Boys Singles 18 Main Draw, Charles DOSSETTER of Australia defeated Jaydon ALEXIS of Trinidad and Tobago 6-3 6-2, Jacobi BAIN of the Bahamas got past fourth seed Juan Sebastian DOMINGUEZ COLLADO of Guatemala 6-3 6-3, Emmanuel VACALARES of the Philippines defeated Robert HAYDEN of Barbados 6-4 6-0, sixth seed Roger LYN of the USA defeated Adriel BOUSQUET of Saint Lucia 6-1 6-2, while Jean Philippe MURRAY of Saint Lucia won over Juan Pablo ROLDAN JACOBSON of Mexico 6-4 6-1.

Donte ARMBRISTER of the Bahamas defeated Cordell WILLIAMS of Antigua and Barbuda 6-2 7-5, third seed Milledge COSSU of the USA defeasted Kaipo MARSHALL of Barbados 6-2 6-4, Adam RAMKISSOON of Trinidad and Tobago defeated Rafael Eduardo GONZALEZ RETANA from Europe 6-3 6-4, and Diego GONZALEZ of Venezuela defeated Richard MALLORY of Bermuda 4-6 6-3 6-3 to round off Boys Singles action on day one.

The Caribbean females did not fare any better than their male counterparts in Girls Singles 18 Main Draw action on the opening day. The number one seed Willa Bay BREUNICH of the USA made light work of Anastasia Natasha WHITE of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-0 6-0, and Nairuti VYAS of India defeated Amarlia BENN of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-1 6-0.

The eighth seed Aleksa MARQUEZ of Peru dispatched Sanaa HEWITT of Barbados 6-1 6-1, third seed Sena TAKEBE of Japan defeated Gabrielle BENN of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-1 6-2, Gabrielle LESLIE of Barbados defeated Emnet SIMUNYOLA of the USA 6-2 6-3, Kimberly SABGA OF Trinidad and Tobago defeated Nikalette HADAWAY of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-0 6-0, sixth seed Sydney CLARKE of the Bahamas defeated Kaylee KIRIVONG of the USA 6-0 6-1, while Rishita VYAS of India defeated seventh seed Sierra DONALDSON of the Bahamas 6-4 6-4.

In other Girls Singles 18 action on day one, Jennifer KIDA of the USA defeated Ariel RYAN of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-0 6-0, and in a match in which the pendulum swung from one side to the other in a dizzying manner, Anya KING of Trinidad and Tobago pulled out all of the stops to defeat a skilled but inconsistent Myka WILLIAMS of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a three set ding-dong battle 6-4 5-7 6-2 .

Fifth seed Sofia Camila ROJAS of the USA gave the 2016 Girls Singles 14 winner Briana Emmanuel NASH of St. Vincent and the Grenadines a rough introduction to the Girls Singles 18 division with a 6-0 6-0 lesson.

Karina JENSRUD of Norway made light work of Tangia RILEY-CODRINGTON of Barbados with a 6-0 6-1 defeat, Valaine CLARKE of Jamaica stopped Alexi HUMPHREY of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-3 6-1, and the number two seed Remika OHASHI of Japan defeated Afrika SMITH of the Bahamas 6-3 6-0 as a tough opening day for Caribbean players came to a close by mid-afternoon.
