KINGSTOWN, ST. VINCENT AND HE GRENADINES; SATURDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2018 – Three champions were crowned today as the 2017 St. Vincent and the Grenadines Inter-League Youth Football Tournament came to a pulsating conclusion.
East Kingstown and South Leeward played to a heart-stopping nil-all extra time final in the Under-11 Division, but it was the East Kingstown goalkeeper who made sure his team stayed ahead with three reflex action saves.
His counterpart was not so sharp though he did save one, but the die was already cast in East Kingstown’s favour as they went on to win 3-2 on penalties, and lay claim to the 2017 SVGFF Under-11 Inter-League Youth Football Champions.
A 42nd minute strike by Javed Hunte of Layou was the only goal in the East Kingstown versus Layou, when the two teams met in the Under-16 Division Final.
The action was non-stop, numerous chances were created by both teams, but Layou held on till the final whistle to be crowned the 2017 SVGFF Under-16 Inter-League Youth Football Champions.
The third champion to be crowned was Central Kingstown, who prevailed over a never-say-die GECCU Calliaqua outfit, courtesy a Mikal Quashie 13th minute strike.
Again the action was non-stop, at times physical, but either team could have won had the chances created scored.
However it was Central Kingstown holding on despite last minute heroics by Calliaqua, to have possession of and be crowned the 2017 SVGFF Under-18 Inter-League Youth Football Champions.
Six matches were played in all, three third place-playoffs, and three finals in the Under-II, Under-16, and Under-18 divisions, respectively.
In the third place play-offs which were played before the finals, Barrouallie defeated Layou 4-nil, with Zideon Cunningham scoring a hat-trick with strikes in the 3rd, 4th, and 20th minutes respectively, while Frankroy Cain slotted in one in the 13th minute.
Barrouallie and North Windward drew 1-all in regulation and extra time, when the two teams met in the Under-16 third place-playoffs, but Barrouallie won 3-2 on penalties.
Shermol Reid equalised for Barrouallie in the 49th minute, following a 35th minute goal by Derronick Nanton for North Windward.
The two teams met in the Under-18 third place play-offs, and again Barrouallie edged out their opponents 2-1.
Trizal Fraser sent Barrouallie 1-nil ahead in the 64th minute, but that lead was soon cancelled out by Edison Hoyte in the 66th minute, only for Gidson Francis to send Barrouallie ahead 2-1 in the 67th minute; Barrouallie winning the third place trophy.
The Awards and Prize Giving Ceremony would be held later this month.
