ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA; WEDNESDAY JULY 05, 2017 – Dominica and Saint Lucia by virtue of their drawn game, has now left the title decider for the results of the last round of matches on Thursday night at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium.
When those two games kicked off, the 2017 Windward Islands Senior Men Football tournament will be up to Dominica and hosts Grenada to lay hold of the title.
For Dominica currently on 5 points, they must defeat St. Vincent and the Grenadines to win the title, but only if Grenada loses. The Vincentians, who as defending champions are in no position to regain the title that they won with two defeats and a victory under their belts.
A draw or a victory against Barbados will ensure that Grenada is crowned the 2017 Windward Islands Senior Men Football champions. Currently on 7 points, a draw will give them 8 points but if Dominica wins, then both teams would end on 8 points. A victory for Grenada would give them 10 points, thus ending all speculation.
On Tuesday night, Dominica and Saint Lucia played to a frustrating goalless draw, to the joy of home fans. Had Dominica defeated Saint Lucia it would have been a race to the finish between Dominica and Grenada.
In Tuesday night’s second game, defending St Vincent and the Grenadines led by a Myron Samuel hat-trick, secured their first points of the tournament, with a 4-2 defeat of Barbados.
Chevel Cunningham opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but Mario Harte equalised in the 15th minute. The score remained tied at 1-all going into the half-time interval, but no one expected the fireworks which was to follow as 4 goals were scored.
Myron Samuel took the game by the scruff of the neck with goals in the 47th, 55th, and the 90th minute respectively; a sequence only broken by a Hadan Halligan 61th minute strike, as St. Vincent and the Grenadines won 4-2.
It was the second goal fest involving the Vincentians, for on Monday night they lost 3-4 to Grenada in a 7 goal thriller.
Current points standings are Barbados with 1 point from 3 games – two losses and 1 draw, St. Vincent and the Grenadines on 3 points from 3 games – 2 losses and a win, Saint Lucia on 5 points from 4 games – 2 draws, 1 loss, and 1 win, Dominica on 5 points from 3 games – 1 win and 2 draws, and Grenada on 7 points from 3 games – 2 wins and a draw.
