Avenues United struggled to beat Keurtons XI in friendly
KINGSTOWN, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES; MONDAY FEBRUARY 19, 2018 – Avenues United pulled of a last minute winner as they struggled to find their feet in a friendly game against a Keurtons XI on Sunday February 18, 2018 at the Keurtons Playing Field.
The local club is preparing for their leg of the 2018 Caribbean Club Championships, scheduled for Santo Domingo in April this year, and have, and will be playing a series of friend matches against local clubs as part of their preparation.
In Sunday’s game, Shavel Cunningham drew first blood when he pounced on a loose ball, and looked across to the assistant, who did not raise his flag to signal offside.
The goalkeeper also looked to the assistant who kept his flag down, and so Cunningham side-footed the ball past the custodian to send Keurtons XI 1-nil ahead in the 7th minute.
Avenues did create chances but failed to convert them. Adding to their woes was the failure to string a series of passes to break down their opponent’s defence, instead relying on two passing and trying to find the strikers with a long pass up-field.
Jolanshoy McDowall equalised for Avenues in the 52nd minute, and then in the dying seconds, Gosnel Ashton rifled a set piece from about twenty yards out into the roof of the net to give Avenues United a 2-1 victory in the 82nd minute, and save some blushes.
Their next friendly is expected to be this coming Thursday at Campden Park against a team yet to be announced, and is also expected to play another friendly this weekend.
